If you are doing this activity indoors, you’ll want to protect your floors with a drop cloth. Lay the drop cloth down and then tape butcher paper onto the drop cloth. The butcher paper will serve as your canvas. If you don’t have butcher paper, you can use brown paper grocery bags.
First, cut off the bottom part of the pantyhose stocking – approximately midway between the knee and foot. Fill the foot portion of the stocking with sand. You can have kids scoop the sand into the stocking, if it’s age-appropriate for them. Remember, don’t fill the stocking all the way up with sand – just enough to roughly form the shape of a baseball. Then tie the top of the stocking tightly, so the sand doesn’t come out.
Next, pour a small amount of tempera paint into the pie tins. You can even add a little bit of liquid dishwashing soap to the paint, which might help making clean up a little easier. You can pour one paint color per pie tin, or you can even combine different colors of paint in one pie tin.
Next, encourage kids to dip the stocking filled with sand into the paint. Then have the kids hold the stocking as high as they can and let them drop it onto the butcher paper. The kids will be fascinated by the different colors and patterns they can create by the paint splattering when the stocking hits the paper.
You can even provide a small step stool so the children can get even higher before releasing their stockings dipped in paint. Remember to hold onto the kids at all time to prevent them from falling.
Children with special needs can participate in this activity, depending on their abilities. The child care provider should assess where the child is in their development and help them accordingly. |
