Transitional Items
For Child Care providers
Type: For Child Care providers   Skills: Social & Emotional Skills
Babies and toddlers need transitional items - items that make them feel safe when they go to visit relatives, start daycare, or enter any unfamiliar environment. The child's temperament will determine what the child chooses as their transitional object. It's important for parents and caregivers to know that each child is an individual and that the child needs to choose the objects that make them feel safe and secure. Transitional Items

How-To
There are lots of different items which parents and caregivers can use to give their children comfort and security.

Observation is the key to working with your child and their temperament. Observe their interests, needs, and fears and take note of how they respond to adults, other children, and the environment.

Adults should anticipate stressful situations for each individual child and support each one as needed. One way to support them is to provide comfort items.

Based on their temperament the child will find comfort in a certain item like a blanket, stuffed animal, toy or even a family photo.

Remember, the adult should follow a child's lead and not push the child into situations that contradict his or her temperament.
