Abstract thinking - Thought that is based on ideas
Accreditation - A systematic approach to documenting and improving the quality of early childhood and school-age programs. A rating of approval granted by a review board after a program has met specific requirements.
Acute illness - An illness that develops quickly, lasts for a limited time, sometimes can be prevented, and can be cured (such as the common cold and influenza), as opposed to chronic illnesses
Alphabetic principle - Idea that a sequence of letters in a written word represents a sequence of sounds in a spoken word
Autonomy - Independence; the stage when children develop the ability to make choices and to have control over their own actions
